Earthquakes
An earthquake is the sudden shaking of the ground caused by the movement of tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface. These powerful shifts can cause buildings to collapse, bridges to fail, and lifelines like power, water, and gas to be disrupted. Unlike storms or floods, earthquakes strike without warning, leaving little time to react.
The U.S. is home to several major fault lines, including the San Andreas (California), Cascadia Subduction Zone (Pacific Northwest), New Madrid Seismic Zone (Midwest), and others. Earthquakes are not limited to the West Coast and can occur in nearly every state.
Preparedness Tips
Before an earthquake
- Anchor bookshelves, cabinets, and heavy furniture to walls
- Store glassware and chemicals on lower shelves with safety latches
- Know how to shut off gas, water, and electricity
- Keep a pair of shoes and flashlight under each bed
- Practice Drop, Cover, and Hold On with your household
- Sign up for earthquake early warning systems (e.g., MyShake App)
During an Earthquake
If indoors:
- DROP to the ground
- COVER under a sturdy table or against an interior wall
- HOLD ON until the shaking stops
- Stay away from windows, mirrors, and glass
- Do NOT run outside during shaking—falling debris causes many injuries
If outdoors:
- Move away from buildings, streetlights, and power lines
- Get to an open space and drop to the ground
- Avoid overpasses, underpasses, and unstable slopes
If driving:
- Pull over and stop—away from overpasses, trees, or buildings
- Remain inside the vehicle until the shaking stops
- Proceed cautiously and avoid damaged roads or bridges
After an Earthquake
- Expect aftershocks—some may be stronger than the initial quake
- Check yourself and others for injuries
- Inspect your home for gas leaks, structural damage, or exposed wiring
- Do not use open flames (e.g., matches) until gas lines are verified safe
- Use texts or social media to communicate—phone lines may be overloaded
- Listen to official alerts for evacuation or boil-water notices
