Space Weather
Space weather refers to disturbances originating from the sun—especially solar flares, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and geomagnetic storms—that affect Earth’s magnetic field, atmosphere, and technological systems. Severe space weather events can disrupt satellite communications, knock out power grids, damage electronics, and interrupt GPS navigation and aviation systems.
While these events are invisible and non-destructive to human health directly, they can have profound effects on critical infrastructure—especially if protections are not in place.
Types of Solar Threats
- Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) – Giant clouds of plasma from the sun
Impact: Cause geomagnetic storms on Earth
- Geomagnetic Storms – Magnetic field disturbances
Impact: Affect power grids, pipelines, satellites
- Solar Flares – Explosive bursts of radiation
Impact: Disrupt radio signals and satellite operations
Preparedness Tips
Personal and home preparedness
- Own a battery-powered or hand-crank radio
- Keep paper maps and backup tools for navigation
- Back up critical data to offline or hardened storage
- Use surge protectors and unplug sensitive electronics during alerts
- Consider a Faraday bag or cage for backup electronics (radios, USB drives, small laptops)
For Businesses and Utilities
- Ensure critical systems are shielded from electromagnetic interference
- Train teams to respond to sudden GPS or comms failures
- Review power grid resilience plans with utility providers
- Install redundant communication paths (satellite, hardwired, cellular)
During a Solar Storm Warning
- Minimize use of high-power or sensitive electronics
- Avoid over-reliance on GPS and digital communications
- Keep emergency lights, batteries, and backup power ready
- Refrain from flying polar airline routes (often rerouted during major events)
Auroras may be visible at lower latitudes during high-activity periods—but the beauty hides potential disruption beneath.
